Naviair Expands Use of Aireon Data in Greenlandic Airspace

Agreement includes use of Aireon’s space-based ADS-B data for surveillance and Aireon Locate for search and rescue operation.

MCLEAN, VIRGINIA – 26 May 2026 – Danish air navigation service provider (ANSP) Naviair is expanding its partnership with Aireon, signing on for more of its gold-standard data products in areas of its airspace.

Naviair, which provides flight information and air traffic control services in Greenlandic airspace, will use Aireon’s space-based automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) in three different use cases, including Aireon’s air traffic surveillance data for situational awareness in Nuuk FIR; Aireon Locate search and rescue resource for Denmark; and Air Traffic Surveillance data in Nuuk Terminal Maneuvering Area (TMA). Naviair went operational with the new Nuuk Approach unit this month and it will use Aireon’s space-based ADS-B as the sole source surveillance data for handling traffic in Nuuk TMA.

The adoption of Aireon data for air traffic surveillance and situational awareness in Greenland follows an announcement in 2025 around the establishment of a TMA around Nuuk International Airport. This infrastructure will allow for the ANSP to more effectively manage traffic in and out of the airport and enable an easier hand-off between controllers in Nuuk Approach and operators at the airport’s Aerodrome Flight Information Service. Additionally, this upgrade is expected to lift capacity restrictions in Nuuk International Airport and enable safe and more efficient traffic handling, creating better conditions for passenger growth and future-proofing air traffic management in Nuuk.

“The Greenlandic airspace has the potential to benefit tremendously from Aireon data,” said Peter Cabooter, Executive Vice President of Customer Affairs at Aireon. “Aireon’s space-based data gives Naviair unparalleled views of the airspace, even over the most remote polar areas.” In addition, Naviair has selected Aireon Locate, a search and rescue resource that allows first responders the ability to rapidly and accurately pinpoint the location of an ADS-B equipped aircraft. Aireon Locate provides critical information in the hands of those who need it most urgently, saving valuable time in emergency situations. Naviair is responsible for search and rescue operations in Greenlandic airspace.

“As a cofounder of Aireon, Naviair is extremely proud to see the expansion of the use of Aireon data in Greenlandic airspace,” said Anders Rex, CEO of Naviair. “Without Aireon, it would not have been possible to establish a new TMA in Greenland in under six months. Having been subject to severe restrictions at Nuuk International Airport, the TMA will have a profound impact on Greenlandic society and for all travelling to and from Greenland. With Nuuk TMA and Aireon data, we are also expanding and future-proofing Naviair’s service delivery in the region.”

About Aireon LLC

Aireon has deployed a space-based air traffic surveillance system for Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) equipped aircraft throughout the entire globe. Aireon is harnessing next-generation aviation surveillance technologies that were formerly ground-based and, for the first time ever, is extending their reach globally to significantly improve efficiency, enhance safety, reduce emissions, and provide cost savings benefits to all stakeholders. Space-based ADS-B surveillance covers oceanic, polar, and remote regions, and augments existing ground-based systems that are limited to terrestrial airspace. In partnership with leading ANSPs from around the world, as well as Iridium Communications, Aireon is providing a global, real-time, space-based air traffic surveillance system, available to all aviation stakeholders.
